Sinclair’s Journey of Healing
Playing 1st Grade for Sydney’s Gordon Highlanders 2008
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…
At 20 years of age i was fit and ‘healthy’ my future was looking bright. However, I was like most other guys my age, I didn’t think about food as nutrition, I just ate whatever I wanted. I partied, took drugs, drank alcohol and treated my body like it was indestructible. Living in Sydney and playing for one of sydney’s premier clubs I was on the cusp of a promising career in professional rugby. Whilst trainig hard in the off-season i was performing some light weight deadlifts and I felt a sharp pain in my lower back. The MRI showed that I had a minor disc buldge in L5/S1. So, change of plans, I had to put training on hold and heal my back. I waS told this wouldn’t take longer than 3 months so I wasn’t bothered. However, that wasn’t how things worked out. My pain just didn’t seem to go away no matter how much rehab I did (and I did a lot). after months went by i realised this wasn’t going to just go away by itself, i put my rugby career on hold and started to explore other healing options. I discovered the paleo diet and for the first time i learnt about healing myself with NUTRITION. from the inside out.
I spent the next 7 years (from 21 - 28) eating an exclusive Palaeolithic diet. Which consisted of grass fed and organic meats, wild caught fish and pasture raised eggs. As well as vegetables and some fruits. It was a high protein, low carb diet that cut out all grains, dairy and processed sugar.
I was eating meat and eggs every day, carbohydrates only before and after my training and I was eating very little fruit. In fact I only at berries and green apples (red apples had too much sugar lol!). While my body was becoming bigger and stronger, the pain that I felt in my back and by this stage my left knee and hip only got worse. In addition, my dermatitis (skin inflammation) was spreading and I couldn’t figure out why my body wasn’t healing. After all I had made some huge changes to my diet and lifestyle. At 23 I was lucky enough to get the incredible opportunity to become personal trainer and chef for the actor Orlando Bloom. So off I went traveling the world and working for an A-list celebrity. Never did I stop searching for answers to my pain though.
The completion of my first ever water fast of 19 days. I lost a lot of weight but this was the first time I had been pain free in 10 years.
I watched black plaque and parasites come out of my body. The smells every time I used the bathroom were unlike anything I had every smelt, putrid! My bowels and my lymphatic system were finally getting the cleaning they needed. Within 10 days I was completely pain free and my skin had cleared up. I was watching my body heal, and fast! After 8 painful years of searching I finally got the answer I was looking for, DETOXIFICATION! However my journey was far from over, one thing I would soon learn is that one fast does not undo a life time worth of poor choices. It was going to be the choices I made each day that would ultimately determine whether I would remain pain free or fall back into the same dark hole. So since my very first water fast, I have continued searching for more answers. I have completed multiple fasts including a 60 day fruit only detox and a 30 day grape fast. I also completed a 20 day water and 20 day juice fast with my brother Saxon (40 consecutive days) which we are making a documentary about (due to be released in late 2020). I completed a 40 day water fast in Bali in August 2019 which was easily my most challenging experience so far. My approach to my health and healing has been some what extreme in the last 2 years and I don’t promote extended water fasting (longer than 10 days) to anyone. When you have been suffering. I have pushed my body, mind and spirit to the limit in search of the best way to heal. What is the best way for me live each day to continue healing and detoxing my body? Does fasting have a role to play and if so what kind of fasting is best?
Training Orlando Bloom at Malibu Gym in California 2015
By my mid-late 20s I was living in Malibu California, still working for Orlando and I had all but given up on my dream to play rugby. I was solely focused on my healing. It was becoming desperate for me as I had started experiencing anxiety and depression on top of my physical pain. My entire left leg had neurological issues and my muscles wouldn’t fire properly. My legs had spider veins developing, my gums were starting to recede, my teeth were starting to turn yellow and I was losing my hair. The dark circles around my eyes were getting worse, I would get outbreaks of acne, I felt fatigued all the time and more and more I started to feel like a shadow of my true self. It just seemed like all my problems were getting worse and I had no idea what to do about it.
I was now 28 years old, 7 years had passed since my back injury and I was no closer to finding an answer. Then I came across a man named Tyler Tolman. I attended one of his retreats in Bali and it was there that I first learnt about the concept of detoxification. I learnt that it wasn’t the things that I was putting into my body that were going to heal me. It was removing the waste that had built up inside of me that was going to enable my body to finally heal. It made so much sense to me now, I had spent my entire life eating the wrong foods and treating my body with complete disregard. My body had become a trash can, and the trash was destroying my insides. I needed to get rid of the garbage. Then Tyler talked about water fasting and I was completely captivated. He talked about animals in nature and how they will fast when they are sick or injured and I thought to myself, I’m an animal, I’m sick and injured. I had to travel to Mexico to renew my US work visa in the coming months so the perfect opportunity to fast came up. I stayed in an Air Bnb all alone for 19 days and consumed nothing but water.
